Our Services
Regular tuning is vital to your piano's health and longevity. It's recommended that pianos are tuned at least every six to twelve months to maintain optimal condition. Our tuning technique is centered around equal temperament with pure octaves and cleanest possible unisons, providing clear, open chords and distinct melodies, with minimal interference. A regular tuning will typically take around two hours.
Also known as a 'pitch raise'. Pianos older than fifty years, and pianos that have not been tuned within the last three years may require extra time and attention. A follow-up standard tuning should be performed within the following six months. From that point, a regular tuning schedule of 6-12 months should be sufficient to maintain a healthy and stable piano.
If you're feeling like your piano is sounding harsher than you'd like, or the volume is louder in certain places than in others, a carefully executed hammer voicing will help to rectify this. It's necessary that a tuning is performed immediately before voicing. The process typically adds an extra hour to your tuning appointment. Your technician will be able to help you assess if voicing is right for your piano.
We are able to diagnose and remedy a variety of mechanical issues including:
Stiff keys
'Bouncing' or double-striking hammers
'Lazy' hammers/poor repetition
Loose pedals
Broken strings
If your piano has recently been moved, it's advised to wait at least six weeks before tuning or servicing. This will allow the piano time to 'aclimatise' to its new environment, and may resolve any initial issues with the piano-key action on its own. It will also prepare the piano for a more stable tuning.
Please be mindful to remove any picture frames or other valuables from the top of the piano, and the wall behind it (enough space for the top lid to be lifted). For insurance purposes, we are reticent to do this ourselves. Thank you for understanding.
Pianos that are older than 40 years, (50 years for Kawais or Yamahas) may present challenges to the technician that require extra time and resources. We are more than happy to get the most out of your piano, but please bear in mind that the appointment time may over-run in these circumstances. If there are too many 'sticky keys' - this may need to be resolved before the piano can be tuned, and may require an additional appointment. It is helpful if you can provide any information on restoration work that you may be aware of.
If you are curious about the age of your piano - in the case of uprights, if you open the top lid, there is usually a serial number stamped on the inside of the cabinet, sometimes on the 'frame' (the big metal part). On grand pianos, the serial number may occur in less obvious places. If you're unsure, we're happy to help.
Ideal climate conditions for a piano are between 40-60% humidity, and room temperature, 22 degrees give or take. Drastic fluctuations in climate are the main concern. Keeping windows, curtains, and blinds closed, and removing indoor plants can help to create a more stable climate.
String breakages are less common than you would think. They will be much more likely due to the age of the piano than an error on the technician's part, usually when the piano is over 100 years old or exposed to a lot of rust. In the case of technician-error, the string replacement will be provided free of charge. By booking, you agree that this is at the sole discretion of the technician.
